The Pima Community College women’s soccer team (10-9-1, 9-8-1 in conference) overcame Scottsdale Community College on Saturday winning 2-1 in the final regular season game of the year. The win secured the Aztecs a spot in the Region I, Division I playoffs.

The Aztecs snapped Scottsdale’s four-game winning streak. Scottsdale was tied for second in the conference coming into the game.

Larissa Adams (Buena HS) broke the tie late in the second half, using a header on a free kick to score the winning goal in the 84th minute. Katie Harayda (Sahuaro HS) had the assist.

“Play was coming my direction and Kendra (Veliz) told me to keep moving. Fortunately, I was there to head it in,” Adams said.”

The Aztecs got on the board when Gisel Duarte (San Luis HS) scored in the 25th minute with an assist from Sarah Dunbar (Buena HS). Scottsdale tied it up in the 67th minute.

“We played very well, very composed,” Adams said. “We knew we needed this win and we put our hearts on the field. During halftime, we knew we had to keep it up and not let down.”

The Aztecs will most likely have the No. 6 seed in the playoffs when the first round begins on Tuesday. The schedule is to be determined.
