Ironwood Ridge Nighthawks Wrestling Team

The Ironwood Ridge Nighthawks won a third consecutive state championship in D-2 wrestling over the weekend.

It’s proving to be quite the year for Ironwood Ridge.

Following last fall’s state championship in football, the Nighthawks claimed their third consecutive Division II wrestling title over the weekend, and they did so in convincing fashion.

With a final team score of 216.5, the Nighthawks obliterated the field of 38 teams, beating their nearest competitor, Gila Ridge, by 88.5 points.

“It was a great victory for the kids,” said Nighthawks coach Tim Berrier. “I’m very excited for them. The kids in this program are not afraid to set high goals, to work toward those goals, or to risk their egos.”

For Ironwood Ridge, the state championship was even sweeter considering some speed bumps in the regular season.

“This group of kids is very resilient,” said Berrier. “The regular season wasn’t super smooth, but nobody got down on the team or themselves. Not a lot of guys get a chance to be on a championship team, and for some of these guys, they have been on three championship teams now.”

Some key finishes for Ironwood Ridge came from Marco Dominguez (third place, 120 pounds), Tate Sandifer (first place, 138 pounds), Troy Taylor (first place, 145 pounds), Matt Filbert (first place, 152 pounds), Tristan Mordecai (second place, 170 pounds), Cameron Nelson (second place at 182 pounds), and Scott Simons (first place, 195 pounds).

In other northwest schools, Mountain View’s Bailey Janis won his second state title on Friday at 113 pounds. Ty Waltz earned a third place finish at 126 pounds. The Mountain Lions finished 12th-place overall.

Marana High School had a solid showing, finishing fourth place with 81 team points.

The Tigers’ Chase Meade finished second place at 138 pounds, and Eli Callahan finished second at 160 pounds.

Canyon Del Oro High School finished in 20th place.
