The Arizona Interscholastic Association released its first set of football and volleyball rankings Tuesday, Sept. 25, with the six programs in northwest Tucson (Canyon del Oro, Catalina Foothills, Ironwood Ridge, Marana and Mountain View) slotted in at different positions by sport.
In the inaugural football rankings, Marana is the highest ranked team in Division 5A, sitting at seventh overall with a 4-1 record this season. Fellow 5A squads Ironwood Ridge and Mountain View are on the outside looking in of the 16-team state playoff, in 21st and 37th in the 43-team conference.
The CDO Dorados have the highest ranking of the two 4A programs in the region, at ninth overall in the division, with a 4-1 record for the season. Catalina Foothills is 22nd overall, sitting at 2-3 ahead of their matchup against the Dorados this Friday.
Pusch Ridge Christian Academy finds themselves in the last playoff spot in 3A, sitting in the 16th spot after a 2-3 start to their season. The Lions face off against Tanque Verde High School this Friday at home.
The standings among local programs in girls volleyball were equally interesting, with Marana and Ironwood Ridge sitting at 11th and 12th overall in 5A, while Mountain View finds itself on the outside looking in, at 19th overall.
In 4A, CDO is slotted in at the third spot overall, ahead of their matchup against second-ranked Salpointe Catholic tonight at 6 p.m., while Catalina Foothills is sitting at 10th overall in the division.
The Lions are ranked 6th overall in 3A, with a 7-1 record for the year, ahead of their sectional matchup with Catalina Magnet on at 6 p.m. tonight.
Both the AIA’s football and girls volleyball standings will update through the season, with the football rankings coming each Tuesday, while volleyball will each week from Tuesday to Friday, with the rankings for each dropping at 10 a.m. Arizona time on the AIA’s website, azpreps365.com.
