The first two weeks of the school year weren’t all focused on the first few games of the football season. Out on the green, young men and women are perfecting their shots, as the golf season is underway.
Ironwood Ridge Girls
The Nighthawks girls played against Tucson High School on Monday, Aug. 13, with Hannah Ports shooting a match-best nine-hole score of 35 for the team. Teammates Raina Ports, Allison Acosta and Kaylee Jewkes finished in spots 2 through 5 in the match, shooting rounds of 37, 42 and 43 in the nine-hole contest for the Nighthawks. The Nighthawks played CDO after press deadline, and play in the Nighthawk invitational this Friday at Catalina Golf Course.
Ironwood Ridge Boys
The Nighthawks boys defeated Sabino in a match on Thursday, Aug. 16, by a score of 193-161. Teammates Connor Wierman and Zander Los led the way for IRHS, with dueling rounds of -1, 35 on the par-36 golf course. Fellow Nighthawks Ben Hogan, Logan Sampsel and Drew Bowers finished with rounds of 44, 47 and 52 for the team against the Sabercats. The team returns to the links on Thursday with a match against Salpointe Catholic.
Mountain View Boys
The Mountain Lions boys fell to Ironwood Ridge by a score of 201 to 171 at Dove Mountain Golf Club on Tuesday, Aug. 14. Connor Wierman of IRHS was the low-scorer of the event, posting a round of 40, while Max Robles was the low-scorer for MVHS, with a round of 47. Nighthawks Jarred Johnson and Logan Sampsel had rounds of 42 and 44 for the Nighthawks, while Devin Ackerman and Ryan Tetreault of Mountain View fired rounds of 48 and 49 for the Lions. The team played Cienega after deadline on Monday, and return to play Sabino this Thursday at Crooked Tree Golf Course.
