Sth Wilson

On Thursday, the Marana boys' volleyball team, on a three-game losing skid, came to visit an Ironwood Ridge team that was on a three-game winning streak.

The Tigers' strategy?

"Be as silly as possible," said Marana’s senior captain Seth Wilson.

"Yell, scream, do whatever to take the pressure off," said Wilson with a smile.

The verbal hyping seemed to work well, as the Tigers went on to defeat the Nighthawks 3-1 (25-18, 15-25, 25-19, 25-23).

On the court, however, no amount of yelling could equal Wilson’s 19 kills, seven digs, three blocks and two assists.

Wilson's athletic skill is complimented by his leadership, according to "mentor coach" John Kittle, who filled in for head coach Alex Ruff on Thursday.

"Energy," said Kittle, head coach of the Tigers last season before stepping down. Wilson "really tries to rally the team."

"Tonight in our huddles, he was telling the guys, 'Keep it loud, keep it fired up, let's keep going,'" added Kittle.

Kittle believes that Wilson, who also plays basketball and has talked to Pima Community College and Yavapai College in Prescott about pursuing that sport after a church mission, is only getting better.

"Coming from last year, he's much improved," said Kittle. "He's matured, he's getting much better hits than he was, he's coming into his stride.

"He’s a hard worker," added the coach.

While church and sports provide Wilson with a lot to do, the senior also finds time to spend with teammates outside the gym.

"We go four-wheeling," said Wilson. "We're all friends, and a few of the guys have Jeeps, so it works."

"In Marana, there's unlimited options," he added with a smile.

It seems as though that statement might also apply to what the rest of the volleyball season holds for Wilson.
