Norman the Nighthawk

Norman the Nighthawk is ready for football at Ironwood Ridge

Week one (or Week Zero, as it’s called by the AIA) is in the books, with Ironwood Ridge, Marana, Pusch Ridge and Catalina Foothills surviving their opening matchups against Mountain View, Horizon, Rio Rico and Buena, while CDO fell to Flowing Wells.

The highlights of the week included the dynamic passing spectacle put on by IRHS junior quarterback Octavio Audry-Cobos, who threw for 69 yards and two touchdowns with 46 yards on the ground for the Nighthawks, while senior back Nathan Grijalva racked up 122 rushing yards and a touchdown for the team on 25 carries.

Friday’s contests were just as memorable, with CDO sophomore back Stevie Rocker bursting onto the scene in his first varsity start, running for 173 yards on 19 carries with three touchdowns for the Dorados in a 38-37 loss to the Caballeros.

Marana’s stalwart quarterback Trenton Bourguet picked up where he left off in the team’s 42-36 win in Phoenix Friday, throwing for 288 yards on 17 of 24 attempts and two touchdowns for the Tigers, while gaining 67 yards on 11 carries.

Xavier Ratliffe had a heck of a start to his senior season for the Tigers, gaining a team-best 91 yards on the ground on 10 carries, with a rushing touchdown in the victory.

The Falcons held off Buena on Friday, thanks to a stout rushing attack that gained 264 yards on 28 attempts and three scores, with senior quarterback Joaquin Holm and back Isaiah Bae scoring, along with junior Enrique Perez.

Holm also had a passing touchdown for Jeff Scurran’s team in their season opener, completing 3 of 7 passes for 108 yards in the 28-17 victory over Buena.
