Canyon del Oro High School’s Maggie McCord set a new meet record over the weekend in the 50-yard freestyle, while leading her team to an overall third-place finish.

On Oct. 1, teams from around Southern Arizona competed in the 2011 Speedo Classic at the UA’s Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.

McCord finished the race in 23.30 seconds, stealing the record (23.95) from Mountain View’s Lacey Nymeyer, who had held it since 2001.

McCord also won the 100-yard freestyle with 52.55, barely missing Nymeyer’s record 51.50, set in 2002.

In other individual results, Ironwood Ridge’s Sara Borendame took first place in the 100-yard breaststroke (1.05.00).

Mountain View’s Kelsey Wuoti took third place in the 200 Free. Madeline Bolin, of Ironwood Ridge, placed sixth in the 100-yard backstroke. Teammate Hayley Bradley placed seventh in the same race.

As a team, McCord led CDO’s women’s team to a third place finish. Xavier took first, and Desert Vista took second.

Ironwood Ridge took fourth place, while Mountain View took 14th, and Pusch Ridge Christian Academy took 21st.

In the men’s race, Jordon Belton of Canyon del Oro took third place in the 50 Free (22.14).

Craig Simmons, of Ironwood Ridge, placed fourth in the 200 Free (1:49.41). Simmons also took seventh in the 500 Free (5:03.13).

Daniel Bleyl, of Ironwood Ridge, took third in the 100-yard butterfly (53.03). Bleyl also placed seventh in the 200-yard IM (2:03.63).

As a team, Ironwood Ridge placed sixth in the meet, Canyon del Oro finished ninth overall and Pusch Ridge rounded out the top 20.

Brophy High School came in first place for the men.

In combined team scores, Ironwood Ridge took sixth, CDO was eighth, Mountain View rounded out the top 20, Pusch Ridge took 25th and Marana came in 27th.
