Let’s take a look at some of the movers and shakers from across the north side over the past week. Here’s a snapshot from across the region:
IRHS Boys Tennis
The Nighthawks went 3-1 last week, defeating Marana (9-0), Walden Grove (9-0) and Desert View (8-1), while losing to Catalina Foothills (7-2). Nick Chenault was the lone Nighthawk to win all four of his singles matches, defeating Ezequiel Jimenez of Desert View, Joseph Platt of Marana and Cody Kratzer of Walden Grove in straight sets, while beating Souley Bangoura of Catalina Foothills in three sets. The Nighthawks return to face Sabino and Sunnyside this week on the road at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday.
CDO Boys Tennis
The Dorados went 0-2 last week, falling to Salpointe Catholic (7-2) and Nogales (8-1). The Dorados played Amphitheater after deadline on Tuesday, and next face Pusch Ridge Christian Academy at home at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 27.
IRHS Girls Tennis
The Nighthawks went 2-2 last week, beating Walden Grove (9-0) and Desert View (9-0), while falling to Catalina Foothills (9-0) and Nogales (6-3). Team number one and two players Liza Pullen and Olivia Manheimer both went 3-1 for the team, beating Melina Orepeza and Ana Bustamonte of Nogales, Hannah Bryan and Megan Trejo of Walden Grove and Micaela Aballero and Yalissa Gomez of Desert View—all in straight sets. The Nighthawks return to play Sabino and Sunnyside, at 3:30 p.m. this Wednesday and Thursday.
CDO Girls Tennis
The Dorados went 0-2 last week, falling to Salpointe Cathoilc and Nogales, 9-0 in each match. The Dorados played Amphitheater after deadline on Tuesday, and next face Pusch Ridge Christian Academy at 3:30 on the road on March 27.
The Nighthawks went 2-0 last week, defeating Mesquite (10-3) and Catalina Foothills (5-3), to improve to 11-1 this season. Keira Painter led the team in hits during the two games, with four total, while Morgan Reidhead had three, as did Kayla Keith. Shelby Thompson was the team’s leader in the circle, throwing back-to-back complete games, surrendering five earned runs on 16 hits in the contests. Thompson is now 3-0 this season, with a 2.79 ERA. The Nighthawks head to Mesa to play in the Desert Mountain Tournament this weekend, kicking off against Red Mountain at 2 p.m. on Thursday.
The Dorados went 3-0 last week, defeating Marana (11-0), Walden Grove (16-1) and Sunnyside (11-2), to improve to 13-1 this season. Katie Stracco led the team during the week, with five hits, three runs and three RBIs, while Kaylani Felix and Amya Legarra both had four hits apiece for the Dorados during the week, scoring two runs apiece, while Legarra also knocked in four RBIs for the team. Mikayla Santa Cruz picked up a win on the mound against Marana, surrendering one earned run in the two appearances over seven innings totals. Legarra threw 11 innings over the week, including five innings against Walden Grove, four against Sunnyside and two against Marana. She had 10 strikeouts against Walden Grove, six against Sunnyside and two against
