Dog Days in the Desert Summer camps

There are plenty of choices for children of all ages to participate in summer programs hosted by the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.

Get ready for summer fun at the Humane Society of Southern Arizona. Registration opens this week for the Dog Days in the Desert Summer kids camps.

Dog Days in the Desert annual summer camps provide children with fun, hands-on, in-depth education on responsible pet ownership, bite safety, animal careers and the importance of the human-animal bond.

There will be a variety of classroom activities, artistic exercises and loads of hands-on animal care. 

Each of the six summer programs is geared toward one of three age groups: Freshmen, ages 6-8; Juniors, 9-11; and Seniors, 12-14. 

Each four-day session runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday. 

The cost for a session is  $225. For HSSA Hand-in-Paw Kids Club members cost is only $200. Hand-in-Paw memberships are $25. 

Kids camp 2014 run down

Freshmen Programs (ages 6-8) runs from June 2 through 5.

Children will get the chance to learn about responsible pet ownership.

July 7 through July 10,  is the Enrichment Enthusiasts Camp. Children will learn about the importance of proper training, exercise and enrichment for companion animals. 

Juniors Programs (ages 9-11); June 9 through June 12,  is Animal Advocate Camp.

Kids will explore basic animal welfare concepts like spaying and neutering, cruelty prevention and animal body language.

July 14 through July 17,  is Animal Art Camp.

This program will focus on the positive impacts art has on animal welfare. Kids will be creating their own works of art promoting pet adoptions. 

Senior Programs (Ages 12-14), runs June 16 through June 19, Compassionate Careers.

Kids will take part in interactive and creative activities covering the opportunities and possibilities of professions working with domestic and wild animals.

July 21 through July 24, Sit! Stay! Spin! Dog Training Camp.

Campers will learn about the importance and basics of dog training. Children will get the hands-on opportunity to work with HSSA shelter dogs waiting to find their forever homes.
