On September 17, 2012, deputies responded to several related incidents throughout Pima County. Ultimately the suspect, Derrick Nelson (DOB 03/23/85), was apprehended and booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Center on multiple felony charges.

Mr. Nelson carjacked a City of Tucson work truck in the Tucson Police Department’s jurisdiction. He was driving the truck when he had a collision with another vehicle at the Chevron located at Palo Verde Road and Irvington Road. The female driver of the other vehicle got out and attempted to speak with Mr. Nelson about the collision. He robbed her, taking her cash, then fled the area in the stolen truck.

Mr. Nelson then drove to the area of Orange Grove Road and Shannon Road where he abandoned the stolen City of Tucson truck and stole a construction truck that was by the side of the road. He drove to an acquaintance’s residence nearby. Mr. Nelson entered the residence and attempted to rob the occupants of their cell phones and money. When he was unsuccessful, Mr. Nelson exited the residence and tried to leave again. A deputy searching the area located the truck in front of the residence. As Mr. Nelson attempted to leave, he rammed the deputy’s fully marked patrol vehicle. Additional deputies arrived on scene and were able to take Mr. Nelson into custody without further incident.
