The Pima County Sherriff’s Department is stepping up its traffic enforcement efforts in one north side neighborhood following several complaints from concerned residents.
On Tuesday, Aug. 21, deputies assigned to the Special Operations Division participated in a task force operation in the area of North La Cholla Boulevard and West Wetmore Road which the department said was “geared towards public safety in designated school zones” in a recent press release.
According to the department, the operation began at 6:45 a.m., and ran for two hours. During that time, two undercover deputies near the intersection provided information regarding stop sign, speed and cell phone violations, among others.
PCSD said that several motorists were stopped and cited for entering a crosswalk zone while children were present. The department also released statistics on the operation, including an incident involving a mother who had a small child on her lap while operating a motor vehicle:
- Traffic stops: 42
- Stop sign violations: 28
- Seatbelt violations: 8
- Child restraint violations: 5
- No proof of insurance: 12
- Cell phone violations: 16
Funding for the operation was made available through grants awarded by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.
