I am often asked how I find time to volunteer in addition to working full-time and caring for three young sons.
My husband, Faisal Adil owner, President and CEO of Sunstreet Mortgage and I provide consulting services to the company. I work directly with the loan officers to help them find the best programs for their borrowers.
In addition to my work with Sunstreet Mortgage, my husband and I own a small financial services firm, Secondary Marketing Services. We provide lock desk, hedging, compliance and product support for small to medium-sized mortgage banks. The work I do with both Sunstreet Mortgage and SMS is very fulfilling and the time I spend with my boys is incredibly important. And yet, I carve out several hours each month to devote to Healthy You Network.
Healthy You Network is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the residents of Southern Arizona on the lifelong benefits of a whole-food, plant-based diet. These include benefits to personal health, the health of other animals, the economy and the planet. Healthy You Network provides resources in the community to assist people in adopting and maintaining a plant-based lifestyle. We do this through community outreach which includes events such as VegFest Tucson, through our speakers bureau, and through our community Resource Center where we host cooking demos, lectures, a support group, a monthly plant-based recipe exchange and potluck and offer a library of books and DVDs.
So back to the question of how I find time to volunteer, or more appropriately, WHY I find time to volunteer for HYN. It is the same reason that I chose to adopt a plant-based lifestyle. I do it for my children and for their future.
Our planet and our personal health simply cannot sustain the Standard American Diet. Precious resources like water are being wasted, the oceans are being destroyed, people are getting sicker and health care costs are rising. There is one way to affect change in all of these areas simultaneously and that is to adopt a plant-based lifestyle and the time to do it is now. We cannot afford to wait. I realize that making this change can be overwhelming and that is why HYN is here to provide support for the community.
