Tucson Fire units responded to a three-story house heavily involved in flames in the 800 block of West Green Street early today, having to fight it from the exterior due to the amount of fire as well as a concern that the home could collapse.

Multiple calls were made to 9-1-1 reporting heavy black smoke coming from the west side of I-10 with the smoke being seen from as far away as Rita Ranch.

TFD units arrived on scene within four minutes and reported a three-story structure with heavy smoke and flames from multiple areas of the house.

The decision was made very quickly that the fire would have to be fought "defensively", or from the exterior. This decision was made in large part to the amount of fire already in the home but there were also concerns that the home could collapse after units reported major cracks in the walls. Units tried to surround the structure from multiple sides to ensure that it didn't spread to any other houses in the area. Several houses were evacuated for precautionary reasons.

The home was being remodeled at the time of the fire and initial reports were that the house was not occupied at the time of the fire. The fire was deemed under control twenty-eight minutes after TFD units arrived on scene. Though the fire was under control, the house still posed a safety concern due to the collapse possibility. TFD units remained on scene to continue to extinguish hot spots.

Ten units and twenty-three firefighters responded to the scene, with no injuries reported.  Tucson Fire investigators were on scene to begin their investigation but no determination had been made yet as to cause or origin. The house was considered a total loss but no dollar estimate had been made.
