At Splendido, an all-inclusive community in Tucson for those 55 and better, residents have plenty of options for following heart-healthy habits. From menu offerings to fitness classes to a community-wide no smoking policy, Splendido offers an array of healthy options. And now the community has added a new six-week class for residents that targets heart health: Heart Center Meditation. “As the name suggests, Heart Center Meditation is an act of meditation that emphasizes opening and healing the heart,” says Beth Ernst, Life Enrichment Manager at Splendido. “It can be calming and energizing, and can even help with stress-related health problems.” 

Meditation in general has been proven to reduce stress and lower blood pressure when done regularly. “Part of our Heart Center Meditation class will include discussing other types of meditation that participants might want to try,” says Ernst. “Whatever type of meditation you try, it can reverse the ‘fight or flight’ state our bodies seem to be in constantly, offering a mini-vacation from everyday stresses—and that’s good for your cardiovascular system.”
