Residents of Sun City, Oro Valley can now take advantage of a completed Aquatic and Fitness Center.

Hundreds flocked to the ribbon cutting ceremony and subsequent open house, hosted on Jan. 9 to celebrate the facility’s opening and to sign up for training classes.

According to Bob Mariani, general manager, the response was so overwhelming that training classes are currently booked through February, though he said adjustments are being made to expedite that process.

“The turnout was even better than expected,” said Mariani. “There has been a tremendous amount of interest shown.”

The 12,000-square-foot facility opened on Jan. 10, and features 43 cardio and weight machines as well as free weights. Two studio rooms will provide several variations of classes, including yoga, zumba, karate, and more.

The facility’s completion comes about a year and a half after an agreement was reached between residents on the type of facility desired.

A previous plan, conceived about two and a half years ago, failed when a consensus couldn’t be reached, but Mariani said opposing opinions ended up being a good thing when considering the finished product in which more than 70 percent of neighborhood members eventually voted in harmony.

“Without that previous planning, we wouldn’t be where we are today,” he said. “As a result of improved communication, this has turned out to be a real success story.”

Mariani said while the pool has remained relatively the same as it was, a discussion is being had to make improvements to it as well, though a timeframe is unclear.

Either way, the spacious fitness center is already doing enough on its own to attract a consistent stream of residents.

“I’m a real gym rat,” said Sun City resident Ann Fall at the grand opening. “I’m 75 years old, and I find that staying active as you age is very important, and I’m looking forward to using the equipment here.”

In addition to an on-site trainer, the fitness center will have monitors to help out if needed, as well as a fitness center coordinator that will be present full time.

Only residents of Sun City are allowed to use the fitness and aquatic center since fees from their homeowner’s association are used to support the facility.

The Aquatic & Fitness Center is located at 1495 E. Rancho Vistoso Blvd. For more information, call 825-3711 ext. 135.
