A third tour of public art in Oro Valley is set for Saturday, Jan. 23.

The tour, put on by the Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance, is led by artist Gail Munden. She'll show people more than 100 unique works of art on commercial and government properties in town.

"SAACA's public art tours offer participants a chance to experience those works firsthand and to learn about the artists, their creative process and the history of Oro Valley's public art program," a release said.

While there are notable examples of Oro Valley's public art collection, such as sculptor Joe A. Tyler's "Learning Tree" outside the Oro Valley Public Library and Mark Rossi's sculpture of a bighorn ram outside the Hilton El Conquistador Golf and Tennis Resort, many other works adorn less-conspicuous public spaces throughout the town.

Munden spent much of the past two years researching and designing SAACA's landmark book on public art in Oro Valley. The book, "Excellence by Design: A Visual History of Public Art in Oro Valley, Arizona," features detailed information about more than 70 works of art scattered throughout town — the first-ever catalogue of public art in Oro Valley.

SAACA's air-conditioned tour coach can accommodate up to 55 people, so reservations for the Jan. 23 public art tour are strongly recommended, the release said. The tour costs $25 per person and lasts approximately three hours.

Participants should meet at 9 a.m. at the Oro Valley Marketplace, on the southwest corner of Tangerine and Oracle roads. Attendees are provided bottled water and a keepsake public art brochure.
