Did you ever convince yourself could get away with an innocent little lie? Maybe you never thought anyone would buy your story, but suddenly you found yourself center stage and knee deep in trouble.

That’s the premise of a new comedy opening May 3 at The Invisible Theatre. In “Premiere!,” legendary playwright Dale Wasserman tells the story of a famous comedic playwright who decides to prove to the world that he can write more than fluff. He knows he’s good, but is mesmerized by the idea of writing a play so remarkable that it will be accepted as a work by William Shakespeare.

He creates a series of zany events that lead to discovery of a long-lost play by the Bard. The play’s suspenseful comedy is based on whether the playwright’s deception will remain uncovered or will it fool the literary world.

“Premiere!” was the last play written by Wasserman, Tony Award-winning author of the book for “Man of La Mancha” and the stage version of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” Both won Broadway’s highest award – the Tony – and were turned into successful movies.

Locally, the production has proven popular with audiences and critics alike, winning the 2008-2009 ariZoni Theatre Award of Excellence for best original play.

This Tucson production is directed by James Blair and stars Invisible Theatre favorites Nick Cianciotto, Chadwick Collins, Robert Guajardo, Victoria McGee, Robert Anthony Peters and Dallas Thomas.
