The racks and shelves are well stocked. The furniture shines brightly. Everything is falling smoothly into place for the grand opening of Oro Valley’s first retail Goodwill store Thursday at 8 a.m.

This is the 11th area retail store for Goodwill Industries of Southern Arizona. The 15,000-square-foot store is packed with merchandise donated from people in the Northwest area.

“Almost everything is donated from this end of town,” said Gary Swingle, marketing specialist for GISA. “We prefer not to ship donations across town, if possible.”

Goodwill stores are well-known for selling gently used clothing and household items at affordable prices. Their shelves and racks are stocked with clothing for men, women and children; furniture, artwork, small appliances, jewelry, and giftware.

A large section of the Oro Valley store is dedicated to a holiday favorite.

“October is our biggest sales month of the year thanks to Halloween,” Swingle said, comparing it to major retailers’ Christmas season.

Halloween merchandise includes costumes, makeup and wigs, and clothing that can be used to create a costume ensemble.

The store has 25 full-time employees. Sales at Goodwill’s retail stores fund its mission program of providing training, services and jobs for people with barriers to employment. Those opportunities will be rolled out after the store is up and running, said Swingle.

The store will be open Mondays through Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. A 20-percent discount will be offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to senior citizens ages 55 and over.

Donations will be accepted during normal business hours.
