Proposed Securaplane Facility

Though in the very early stages of discussion, the Town of Oro Valley could potentially welcome a key business to Innovation Park.

On Dec. 10, Town staff will host an open house for the proposed expansion of Securaplane Technologies, a world leader in supplying avionics equipment for business, commercial, and military aircraft, including video cameras, security systems, emergency and main ship batteries, battery chargers, inverters, and wireless control systems.

The expansion, a 55,000-square-foot manufacturing and office building in the Town’s overlay district, would serve as a replacement to the existing Securaplane location at the Foothills Business Park in Oro Valley.

“Should this proposal come to fruition, it would be a significant addition to Oro Valley,” said Communications Administrator Misti Nowak.

If the project goes forward, the new location would undergo the Town’s Economic Expansion Zone (EEZ) process, which was approved in early October, and applicable to businesses opening at Innovation Park. The process eliminates about three months from the total development process, according to senior planner Matt Michels.

On Oct. 3, council unanimously approved the EEZ with the hope it would attract and retain businesses with high quality jobs by reducing the amount of time it takes a business to open its doors.

Steps eliminated from the typical review process include the neighborhood meeting, review by the Conceptual Design and Review Board, and Town council review.

“We’re trying to be unique, said Michels at the time of the EEZ approval meeting. “At worst, this will get us on parity with our competitors, and at best, it will help us stand out.”

With the council vote, business applicants whose project fits the Town’s existing zoning code are exempt from those prerequisites, so long as the project meets the Town’s existing zoning and development standards.

The open house runs from 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall, 11000 N. La Canada Dr. A presentation will be given to attendees regarding the possible introduction of Securaplane, and Town staff will be in attendance to answer any questions and respond to any feedback from the public.

For questions regarding the project, contact Matt Michels at or t229-4822. A summary of the open house will be provided on the EEZ webpage after the meeting. The EEZ webpage is located on the Oro Valley website at
