Dove Mountain Grill has been open less than six months, and already it has established itself as the kind of gathering place where everyone is a friend and the staff knows your name.

The creation of chef Bruce Yim and sommelier Laura Williamson, Dove Mountain Grill offers a welcoming interior, comfortable seating done in caramel-colored leather, basalt stone floors, and hues of cool blues and grays.

"We're a friendly, neighborhood-style grill with comfort type food with a flair," said general manager Ward Mack. "The restaurant is open and airy, with lots of glass and excellent sunset views."

Dove Mountain Grill's footprint is in the shape of a large "L" and covers about 3,600 square feet. The dining room seats 74 people, another 22 can dine in the bar area, the front patio seats 35 and the west patio, 28.

Yim, who grew up watching Julia Child and the Galloping Gourmet, said he knew he wanted to be a gourmet chef even before he knew what that meant. His three-decade career as an executive chef has taken him to La Fleur and Le Pavillion in Washington, D.C., Café Royal in Philadelphia, the Polo Lounge, the 21 Club and Ristorante Harry Cipriani in New York, Wolfgang Puck's Postrio in San Francisco, Sweet Basil in Vail and Harry's Bar in Venice, Italy.

"We're known for our veal meatloaf with parmesan spinach, whipped potatoes and burgundy gravy," Yim said. "It's been a big hit, as has our hormone- and antibiotic-free roasted prime rib from Creekstone Farms in Kansas, and our free range whole roasted chicken."

Yim noted that farm fresh produce also graces the Dove Mountain Grill menu, such as tomatoes from Willcox and other locally-grown fruits and vegetables as available.

The chicken and cheese enchiladas, grilled salmon, sautéed red snapper, grilled New Zealand lamb T-bone, and fish and chips also are popular with neighborhood regulars.

Nearly 70 wines are available on the wine list that Williamson put together, with 20 of them available by the glass.

Williamson is one of only 130 master sommeliers, and one of just 17 women certified by the Court of Master Sommeliers. Throughout her career, she's worked in top restaurants including La Tour and Sweet Basil in Vail, Boulder Wine Merchant and Flagstaff House Restaurant in Boulder, and Kim's Restaurant in Maui.

Williamson's wine list offers a changing selection of diversified wines representing growing regions in Italy, France, Spain, Australia, Argentina and California.

Dove Mountain Grill has something special going from Sunday through Wednesday. Sunday offers an 8-ounce prime rib special, Monday is meatloaf madness, Tuesday offers half-price bottles of wine from a select 30-bottle list, and Wednesday is wine tasting night with 10 percent off your meal if you stay for dinner.

Mack summed up the ambiance at Dove Mountain Grill. "It's a Cheers-style bar where you can walk around, meet and get to know people," he said. "It's a social gathering place."
