Every year about this time, the cat adoption room at Pima Animal Care Center is flooded with kittens, leaving lots of kitties in need of new homes.

In honor of national Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month and to make sure our feline friends have a chance to bring some purr and pizazz to more local households, Pima Animal Care Center is waiving adoption fees for all adult cats for the entire month of June.

This is the first time Pima Animal Care Center has tried this promotion, but other shelter organizations across the country have reported a significant uptick in cat adoptions during similar events.

A published 2009 study by two staff members from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, who were intrigued by a successful free cat program through the Wisconsin Humane Society, determined that adopters didn’t place any lower value on the free cats than they did on others. The researchers also found such programs could “dramatically impact the lives of thousands of shelter cats who would otherwise reside in a shelter for months or be euthanized.”

Our adoption counselors still will screen potential adopters to help them make good matches and educate them about the joys of feline parenthood. There are other benefits for adopters as well. Cats from our adoption center go home with a vaccination and a microchip. They’ll also be spayed or neutered, so adopters can feel confident their new family member won’t be contributing to the overpopulation problem that is filling our shelters in the first place.
