Welcome to summer. Our hottest season officially began yesterday and we have the rising temperatures to prove it. It’s all too easy for tempers to rise, as well, this time of year, so let’s focus our energies on useful activities.

Such as helping Marana win a one-acre orchard that will benefit its Community Food Bank. We have until June 30 to keep the Marana Heritage Farm Project in the list of top five online vote-getters in the “Communities Take Root” program sponsored by Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream, Inc. Participants must finish in the top five when voting expires on June 30 to win.

Right now Marana is in fifth place and hanging on by a slim lead over sixth place. Earlier this month, the town dropped from fourth place to fifth. Let’s prevent it from dropping out of the top five – Your daily vote could make the difference!

You don’t have to live in Marana to vote. Explorer readers proved they have the power to make things happen when they kept the Town of Oro Valley as the top online vote-getter to win a $25,000 national grant from The Keg Steakhouse & Bar. (The official results will be announced June 29.)

To vote for Marana and for more information about the program, visit The Explorer’s website at or Remember, you can vote once a day.

Good things are happening with our Drop 10 Percent Challenge participants. I’ve heard from many of them and they are losing weight! Our goal is to lose 10 percent of our body weight by Aug. 31, but all weight loss is welcomed.

Care to join us? I email everyone words of encouragement and weight loss tips every Wednesday. Joining is easy. Just email me at I look forward to hearing from you.

Good health and the opportunity to win an orchard are just two reasons we should be grateful this summer. Another is Gabrielle Giffords’ visit to Tucson this past weekend. I know she has a long road to recovery ahead of her, but her remarkable progress gives so many of us hope for good things in our future. People living in the areas devastated by wildfires this season need that hope and our support. Please help out if you can.

Have a great week!
