Americans witnessed a modern day miracle Monday when Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords appeared on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives Monday  to cast her vote on the debt-ceiling increase.

She voted in favor of the increase, which is important to note. But even more significant was that the 41-year-old congresswoman was there. Less than seven months after being shot through the left side of her brain in an assassination attempt, Giffords was in public, smiling, greeting and hugging colleagues and friends, and conducting business as usual.

Some cynics have called her appearance a well-timed publicity stunt. Her staffers say no, stating Gabby felt compelled to attend the session due to the gravity of the issue at hand.

I say leave that alone for a few moments and reflect on Giffords’ remarkable recovery. True, she still has a long way to go, but for now, let’s celebrate that it is sometimes possible to do the impossible, to beat the odds, and make dreams come true.

It’s time for our other little miracles – our kids – to return to school in Northwest Tucson. I invite you to share your back-to-school moments with our readers by emailing your digital photos to me at Please note: my email cannot accept attachments totaling more than 7 MB. If you have several photos, you may have to send separate emails.

Be sure to identify the people in the picture and the occasion (first day of school, back-to-school shopping, etc.) and include your name, the town in which you live and phone number.

I can’t wait to see them!
