  • CDO baseball falls in state semifinals

    The CDO baseball team fell 5-3 in the 4A state semi-finals. Nogales jumped out to a 5-0 lead but saw the Dorados climb back into the game in the sixth. Kiko Romero led off the inning with a triple and scored to batters later on a Derrick Calvillo single. With two on Brian Romero hit the team’s second triple of the inning, plating two more runs.The Dorados had a final chance in the seventh, but were set down in order.

  • CDO softball wins state title

    The CDO softball team beat Sunrise Mountain 4-2 to win their ninth softball state title in school history.CDO jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks in larger part to a three-run first inning. A lengthy lightning delay did nothing to sap the Dorado’s energy. Before the delay Hope Banales led off the game with a single. After the game resumed Ellessa Bonstrom drove her home with a triple and she came home on a Ari Acedo single. Acedo then scored on a Nene Campos RBI single.Down 4-0 Sunrise Mountain scored two in the sixth to cut the lead in half, but that was as close as they got.

  • CDO softball team playing for state title

    The Canyon Del Oro softball team is back in familiar ground, playing for a state title. The Dorados were set to play Sunrise Mountain on Tuesday for a chance to win their ninth state championship. CDO advanced to the championship game with a 7-0 win over No. 5 Salpointe in a game played at Hillenbrand Stadium, home of the University of Arizona softball team. CDO took the lead in the first and never looked back. Hope Banales led off the Dorado first with a triple and two walks later the bases were loaded. Even after a runner’s interference call the bases remained loaded, and the Dorados finally scored two runs in an Alexis Kaiser single and a fielder’s choice. Salpointe escaped the jam in the first and another in the second and after four complete the game was still just 2-0.  In the bottom of the fifth CDO got back on the board. Back to back singles and a walk loaded the bases. Acedo singled to score Wendy Castro and Anya Gonzales drove home two more to make it 5-0. The Dorados were not done in the inning. A Nene Campos double scored two more and pushed the CDO lead to 7-0. Salpointe did not threaten the rest of the way and the Dorados advanced to their 12th state title game.
