Matt Clark’s tenth inning grand slam put the Tucson Padres ahead for good in a seesaw victory, 10-6, over the Round Rock Express on Saturday at the Dell Diamond.

The Padres struck first in the top of the second when Andy Parrino hit a RBI double to left field with two outs. Tucson had a chance for another run earlier in the inning, but Vince Belnome was called out at home plate trying to score on a Rocky Gale single. Beamer Weems added to the Padres lead with a solo shot in the fourth.

Parrino struck again in the seventh with an RBI single to make the score 3-0. Parrino finished the game with four hits.

The Express began their comeback in the bottom of the eighth. Luis Hernandez’s three-run home run to left center field tied the game 3-3. Three batters later Round Rock took the lead n a fielder’s choice by Joey Butler. The Express scored once more in the inning to increase their lead to 5-3.

Blake Tekotte’s RBI single brought the Padres within one in the top of the ninth, before Matt Clark singled home two runs to put Tucson ahead, 6-5. Padres’ reliever Miles Mikolas came in to close out the ninth, but a double and a sacrifice fly forced the game into extra innings. With two outs and the bases full in the top of the tenth, Clark hit the grand slam just out of the reach of a leaping Butler into the right field stands. The grand slam was the first ever by a Tucson Padres player in extra innings.

Matt Palmer threw seven innings, allowing one run and three hits all coming off the bat of former Tucson catcher Luis Martinez. Express starting pitcher Martin Perez went five innings allowing four hits, four walks, and two runs both earned. Mikolas picked up the win, his second of the season.

Saturday’s win improves the Padres’ record to 2-3 in extra inning contests.

Tucson split the series with Round Rock going 2-2 in the four game series.
