Pima Community College Aztec Athletics

The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (1-3, 1-0 in conference) would have an early lead in its game against Eastern Arizona College but would have to fight to maintain it.

The Aztecs defeated Eastern Arizona 99-96 to gain its first win of the season. The Aztecs went on an early 14-0 run to take a 17-6 lead but Eastern would go on a 7-0 run of its own later in the half to cut Pima’s lead to 28-21. The Aztecs would lead 55-51 at halftime after Kendrick Little scored a basket before time expired.

 Eastern would tie the score on three occasions before taking a 75-73 lead with 9:35 left in the game but the Aztecs responded quickly going on an 8-0 run to lead 81-75. Eastern would cut Pima’s lead to two but that’s as close as it would get. Up 91-89, Andres Marquez (Nogales HS) would hit a pair of free throws and would dish the ball to Murphy Gershman for two points to make it 95-89 with 46.6 seconds left. Matt O’Boyle (Sunrise Mountain HS) helped seal it with a three-point play to make it 98-89.

The Aztecs had five players score in double figures led by Gershman who finished the game with a double-double scoring 19 points with 16 rebounds and five assists. Little also had 19 points and Bryan Cervantes (Nogales HS) had 18 points and nine rebounds. Marquez had 16 points, O’Boyle finished with 14 points, and Cameron Volk (Tucson Magnet HS) had 10 points.

The Aztecs will play at Central Arizona College on Saturday in Coolidge at 4 p.m.
