The Pima Community College softball team (18-10, 13-9 in conference) had to rally in the first game but the bats came alive in the second game on Tuesday as the Aztecs swept Chandler-Gilbert Community College at the West Campus.
Down 3-0, the Aztecs came back to score four runs in the 5th inning to win 4-3 in the first game. Shawna Comeaux (Sabino HS) hit an RBI single to score Gemma Contreras (Salpointe Catholic HS) to get Pima on the board. Alejdandra Ortiz (Tucson Magnet HS) and Aubre Carpenter (Sabino HS) also hit RBI singles in the inning. Victoria Mariscal (Douglas HS) put the Aztecs up for good with her RBI single that scored Ortiz. Yvette Alvarez (Sahuarita HS) got the win for the Aztecs improving to 8-7 on the year. She gave up three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.
The bats came alive in the 1st and the 3rd innings as the Aztecs won the second game 12-1 in five innings. Alvarez got Pima on the board with a two-run homerun as part of a five-run inning. Noelle Medina (San Manuel HS), Stephanie Ramirez (Benson HS) and Stacey Ramirez (Benson HS) each had RBI singles in the first inning. Carpenter hit a two-run RBI triple to put the Aztecs up 11-1. She scored after Stephanie Ramirez hit her second RBI single of the game. Alvarez went 2 for 2 with three RBIs and two walks. Carpenter went 1 for 2 with three RBIs, two runs scored and a walk. Stephanie Vejar (Tucson Magnet HS) improved to 9-2 on the year. She had one strikeout and one walk.
The Aztecs will play in the Deanna Mauer Classic at the Paul-Mason Sports Complex in Casa Grande on Friday and Saturday. They play Howard College (TX.) at 1 p.m. and Illinois Central at 3 p.m.
