NW hot-rodders turn dirt-track laps for kicks, cash

Craig Grau/The Explorer, Nearly every minute spent in the pit gets funneled toward making the car faster. “My thing is making them run and hum,” says mechanic Jim Hindley, who spends a moment adjusting Northwest-side racer John Buerger’s 500-horsepower Camaro between laps, at Tucson’s USA Racepark.
Trent Kerth/Special to The Explorer, Northwest-side mailman John Buerger delivered a heat lap victory, placed pole position and turned 17 laps before another racer bumped his right front wheel, effectively ending his race at USA Racepark last Saturday night. The track averages 1,200 fans during events featuring cars from several classes -- ranging from souped-up subcompacts to fine-tuned sprint cars that barely stay attached to the dirt.
