Marana 26, Flowing Wells 24

The Tigers (1-5, 0-0) won their first game of the season and did it with offense in a thriller.

Addin Soto completed 11 of 19 passes for 133 yards and a season-high three touchdown passes. The Tigers scored touchdowns in all four quarters. Soto hooked up with Solomon Stokes for a three-yard touchdown in the first. Then, the Tigers took a 13-3 lead in the second, as Soto found Jaylon Hill for 19 yards and a touchdown. In the third quarter, Soto found Kord Catt for 27 yards and a touchdown for a 20-10 lead. The final score came on a 24-yard run by Lewis Payne.

Tanner Morse led the ground game with 68 yards, but Payne, the team's powerful fullback, became a force in the offensive scheme, rushing for 47 yards on five carries. Stokes was eight for 32. The ground game gained 151 yards overall.

Through the air, Catt was the go-to guy with seven catches for 75 yards, while Hill had three catches for 67 yards.

Not to be outdone by the offense, the Tiger defense limited the Caballeros to just 39 yards rushing.

This week, the Tigers will host Cienega.

Ironwood Ridge 67, Tucson 48

The Nighthawks (4-3, 2-1) won a wild, high-scoring affair. Both teams scored touchdowns in all four quarters.

Mitch Fischer opened the scoring with a 71-yard touchdown run. Fischer gained 216 yards rushing, and also scored on a 42-yard run.

Gabe Campa continued to assume more playing time, and he also topped 100 with 134 yards rushing on eight carries.

With the running game motoring for more than 470 yards, senior quarterback Tyler D'Amore only needed to throw 16 passes. He still threw five touchdowns passes and had 128 yards passing. D'Amore has 18 TDs and almost 1,500 passing yards this season.

Trevor Wesley scored three touchdowns in the win, and caught 11 passes for 92 yards. The 604 yards on offense by the Nighthawks was a season high.

This week, the Ridge travels to Sierra Vista Buena.

Mountain View 45, Rincon 31

The Mountain Lions (3-4, 2-1) won their second in a row.

Cris Thorson had a breakout game. The sophomore quarterback completed 11 of 17 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran nine times for 108 yards and two scores.

Dillon Davidson joined him in the century category, rushing 14 times for 109 yards, and also scored on a 40-yard touchdown run. "He's gotten more comfortable in his role," said coach Justin Argraves.

Aries Hyman caught three passes for 107 yards. He caught the game's first touchdown pass from 36 yards out, and later grabbed a 64-yarder from Thorson, which gave the Mountain Lions a 38-19 lead.

"Aries Hyman is a very special player," Argraves said. "He's amazing."

Aaron Noel returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown. Zach Henschell and Devon McPeek also got into the interception column.

"The team's coming together," Argraves said. "The kids are starting to see the hard work in the win column."

One concern crept up. Rincon scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. "We need to finish games," Argraves said.

This week is a bye week, then on Oct. 22 Mountain View plays at Salpointe Catholic.

Pusch Ridge 13, Canyon State 6

The Lions (5-1, 4-0) won their fifth straight. Credit the defense for this win.

Quarterback Tyler Goodwillie continued to show his speed and athleticism, as he ran 20 times for 98 yards. However, the Lions trailed 6-0 at halftime.

"We had a heart-to-heart at halftime," said coach Bob Vance. Entering the game, Canyon State was averaging 40 points a game. Tyler Vance scored on a 4-yard run in the third quarter to tie it, 6-6. Then, Vance had the tie-breaking touchdown on a 6-yard run in the fourth quarter.

"They're the most athletic team we've faced," said coach Bob Vance. "They swarm to the ball." But the Lions were equal to the challenge, as the defense pitched a shutout. The only score by Canyon State came on a 64-yard interception return, as Goodwillie was hit on the play, and was forced to throw the ball early.

"We had about 10 tackles for losses," Vance said.

Sam Dunn, Andrew Stanton (back after an injury) and Daniel McLeod, at defensive back, led the outstanding defensive effort. This week, the Lions play at Hayden.
