There's nothing about baseball that Gabriel Gordon doesn't like, according to his father.

"I don't really think he has a favorite area," said Mike Gordon. "He just loves all aspects of baseball; even the practice."

Such love may have been the deciding factor in Gabriel winning the Arizona / New Mexico championship in the 9-10-year-old age bracket of the Aquafina Pitch, Hit and Run on May 31.

The Major League Baseball-sponsored competition, held at the Arizona Diamondbacks' Chase Field, challenged competitors to throw strikes, hit for distance and accuracy, and test their speed by running from second base to home.

Gabriel's combined score, achieved on the same field roamed by his favorite player, Diamondbacks' shortstop Stephen Drew, qualified him for the national championships to be held in St. Louis during Major League Baseball's All-Star break.

Gabriel was not one of the three selected to move on. But he's already planning for next year's version of the contest.

"Yes, most definitely," was the response from Mike Gordon when asked if his son was looking toward that future.

The Thornydale Little Leaguer, a member of the National League Giants last season, is now playing for the league's All-Star team.
