The District 5 Little League baseball tournaments have all but come to a close. Just two area teas are still alive and when the weekend is over four area teams will have won district titles.
It will be two area teams batting for the district title on Wednesday night. CDO will host Continental Ranch. The pressure is on the visitors as Continental Ranch has to beat CDO twice to win the title, whereas CDO needs just one win in two games to the state championship tournament, which will actually be hosted at CDO starting July 14.
The game is at 6:30 p.m. at Kriegh Park, field No. 1.
Both CDO and Thornydale qualified for the championship bracket, but both were eliminated over the past few nights. Thornydale knocked CDO out with an 11-7 win in the first round, but two nights later fell 21-15 to Coronado. Coronado will face Western for the title.
Thornydale won the 9-10 district title with a 21-5 thrashing of Tucson Mountain. Thornydale went 3-0 in the event, outscoring the opposition 57-19. They open the state tournament on July 12 at Freedom Park on Tucson’s south side.
Although scores were not available, Thornydale beat Tucson Mountain to win the District 5 title and advance to the state championships. They open play this weekend in Coolidge for their state title chase.
