Having to dribble two basketballs at the same time proved to be a challenge for most of the third through fifth grade boys and girls who attended the first week of the Ironwood Ridge High School basketball camp last week.

Even with such a challenge, the young athletes came out more improved and better basketball players by the end of the week.

“There are a lot of new players here and some of them have never played basketball before,” said Nikki Simpson, head varsity coach of the Ironwood Ridge girls’ basketball team. “We had them do some difficult stuff but it was great to see how they persevered the first day and came back on Tuesday excited and ready to go.”

Twelve children attended the Ironwood Ridge camp, where they learned key fundamental skills through basketball drills and games. Helping with the camp was Ironwood Ridge basketball player Ana Cossette. For the upcoming senior the most exciting thing to see was the participants’ improvement over the course of the camp.

“I used to do sports camps when I was younger and it always really encouraged me and got me excited about the sport,” said Cossette. “It’s about starting with the basic skills and seeing the improvement.”

Cossette, along with a number of other Ironwood Ridge girls’ basketball players, helped out with the camp. Simpson said having the girls help out is good for the local community to see.

“It’s good for the program and I think good for the girls to help the kids out,” said Simpson. “The camp has been full of positive energy and the turnout this year was better than last year.”

Besides working on fundamentals through drills, the camp also included camper of the day and a variety of fun games. Two of the favorite games for the participants were queen or king of the court and knockout.

Simpson was pleased with the turnout and is looking forward to this week with sixth through eighth grade girls. The camp runs June 10 to June 13, starting at 8:30 a.m
