A young free throw shooter from Oro Valley has advanced to state competition in the Elks Hoop Shoot.
Bryant Anderson earned first place in the 8-9 boys age group at the South District Hoop Shoot in Sahuarita on Jan. 9.
Bryant, a fourth-grader at Copper Creek Elementary School, heads for the state contest Feb. 6 in Apache Junction. State winners go on to the semi-final contest in Las Vegas, Nev. Those winners then compete at the national finals in Springfield, Mass.
Catalina Mountain Elks Lodge #2815 held its local Hoop Shoot competition at Immaculate Heart Middle School in November. Winners were Anderson, Tessa McCall, Langston Hampton and Jacoeb Hampton. At the district level, Tessa McCall and Langston Hampton placed second in their 8-9 age groups, and Jacoeb Hampton was third in the boys 12-13 age group.
"These girls and boys should be very proud of themselves for having advanced to this level of competition," said Richard Esparza, Catalina Mountain Lodge Hoop Shoot chairman.
The Elks Hoop Shoot is an annual national free throw shooting contest for youngsters ages 8 through 13. It gives youngsters "an opportunity for spirited competition, fine relationships with their peers, and to travel statewide, regionally and nationally at a minimum expense to their parents or school," a release said.
