The Pima Community College women’s basketball team (12-12, 8-7 in conference) took over in the second half to defeat Chandler-Gilbert Community College 85-66 on Saturday.

The Aztecs trailed by as much as eight points in the first half but went on a 7-0 run near the end of the half and would go into the locker room down 40-37. In the second half, the Aztecs took a 46-44 lead with 16:13 left and would not give up the lead the rest of the game. The Aztecs used a couple of 9-0 runs in the second half to pull away for good. The Aztecs led by much as 19 points late in the game.

A’jha Edwards (Tombstone HS) posted her 14th double-double of the season with 20 points and 15 rebounds. She scored 12 in the second half. DJ Davis (Tolleson HS) hit four 3-pointers in the game and finished with 18 points while Ashlei Scott (Chandler HS) contributed with 13 points and five assists. Mya Perrow-Donovan grabbed 10 rebounds.

After the game, coach Todd Holthaus presented sophomore guard Alyssa Roche (Cienega HS) with this year’s Bruce Fleck Scholarship Award. This award goes to a women’s basketball player who best exemplifies work in the classroom as well as on and off the court. It is in honor of the late coach. Roche received a book scholarship, an individual plaque and her name displayed in the gym of previous recipients.

“Today was a very special day for the women’s basketball program,” Pima coach Todd Holthaus said. “Roche was a deserving recipient and to honor our friend Coach Fleck with a victory was icing on the cake.”
