Ask him what he loves about football, and he replies simply, “The environment.”

What Canyon Del Oro’s Retz does on the field, however, speaks volumes.

The senior plays both wide receiver and defensive back for the 10-1 Dorados, and in Friday’s 54-21 victory over Prescott, his numbers sounded pretty gaudy.

Retz led CDO receivers with four catches for 96 yards and a score, the touchdown coming in the third quarter on a 28-yard, end zone pass that seemed well beyond reach until the moment he hauled it in on the tips of his fingers.

“I wasn’t really thinking about it, I just wanted to go out there and make a big play for the team,” said Retz.

On the defensive side of the ball, Retz notched a late-game interception, his fifth of the year. His regular season total of four was tops in the 4A Sonoran Region.

Although Retz himself may be silent in regard to his achievements on the football field, the same doesn’t go for Dorado head coach Pat Nugent.

“He made some unbelievable catches for us out there today,” said Nugent. “He brings a perfect complement to (fellow CDO wideout) Josh Robbins. People don’t know how to cover him. He’s been an huge addition to this team.”

Even more surprising is that Retz did not start his football career as a freshman, instead deciding to come out for the junior varsity team as a sophomore.

Three years of football will probably be all there is for the senior, who, as he puts it, is “a baseball guy” and will pursue that sport in college.

Right now, however, there is still time left in Retz’s gridiron career, and he and the Dorados visit #3 Paradise Valley this Friday at 7 p.m.

It might be good for the Trojans, and whoever the softspoken Retz and CDO face down the road, to realize the truth of the old saying “Still waters run deep.”

Yes, indeed they do. And in Retz’s case, they catch passes while doing so.
