PCC Women’s Soccer Win Shootout, Advance to Semifinals

The Pima Community College women’s soccer team (11-9-1) advanced to the Region I, Division I semifinals on Tuesday after upsetting No. 3 Scottsdale Community College in a shootout.

The No. 6 seeded Aztecs and Scottsdale were tied 1-1 after 110 minutes of play and Pima won the shootout 3-2. Rachel Ridlinghafer (Ironwood Ridge HS), Larissa Adams (Buena HS) and Miranda Smith (Sahuaro HS) scored in the shootout. Shelby Penrod (Marana Mountain View HS) made saves on Scottsdale’s final two attempts to seal it. She finished with nine saves for the game.

“I was really confident going into the P.K.s,” Penrod said. “We’ve beat them before. We knew their style of play and their strongest players.”

Scottsdale got on the board first scoring in the 31st minute but the Aztecs responded when Ridlinghafer placed a sharp cross-pass that was headed into the goal by Adams in the 36th minute to tie it.

Pima beat Scottsdale last Saturday 2-1 in Scottsdale to make the playoffs. It also avenged the loss from last season Region I, Division I semifinals game when Scottsdale beat the Aztecs.

The Aztecs will play the winner of tonight’s game between No. 7 Phoenix College and No. 2 Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Thursday.

Goals: PCC – Adams (Ridlinghafer) 36th minute.
