It was a battle for bragging rights last week, as the Ironwood Ridge High School women’s and men’s volleyball teams went head to head in the Battle of the Sixes.

The IRHS volleyball teams are some of the best in the state, with the men finishing the 2010 season with an overall record of 18-16 and a conference record of 8-4. The women finished the season 34-10 overall and undefeated in conference play at 12-0.

In the May 17 Battle of the Sixes, the contest was played on a women’s height net with a special attack line for the guys to even out the trajectory. All other volleyball rules remained in place.

After a tough game, the boys came out on top, beating the women’s team 3-1.

The event first started at Ironwood Ridge in 2003, and the men have been successful, holding a 4-0 record over the women.

Due to some coaching changes, the event wasn’t held over the last four years, but was revived this year.
