Ironwood Ridge sophomore Dillon Kennedy’s team-mandated mohawk is temporary, scheduled to grow out before he applies to med school.

The No. 2 tennis player’s top-fueled 6-0, 6-3 performance helped lead the fifth-seeded Nighthawks to a 5A-II team tennis championship banner last Tuesday over No. 2 Phoenix North, during a 5-1 win.

“I started out strong, kept my pace all the way throughout, and closed it out really fast, actually,” Kennedy said.  “So everything was going real well for me that day.”

Kennedy’s 4.5 GPA manages to stand out on the team, which averages around 3.8 overall.  And while his math-and-science inclinations guide him toward a medical future, he spent much of the spring amazing equally mohawked coach Ryan Bais with his on-court work.

“Dillon’s played about as well as I’ve ever seen him play in the years he’s been here,” Bais said.

And that’s bad news for the Nighthawks’ competition next season, as they’re set to graduate only one senior come May.

“We’ll pick up one more guy at the bottom of the lineup probably, and I think we’ll be as strong, if not even stronger, next year,” Kennedy said.
