The Pima Community College baseball team (15-10, 9-4 in conference) had a tale of two games on Saturday as it split against Yavapai College at the West Campus.

The Aztecs managed just three hits in their 2-0 loss in the first game. Cole Plouck (Empire HS) pitched a great game but couldn’t get the offensive support. Plouck dropped to 1-2 on the year after pitching seven innings and giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits with four walks and no strikeouts. Devon Carrillo (Sahuaro HS), Kellen Marruffo (Sabino HS) and Cooper Smith (Canyon del Oro HS) each went 1 for 3. Yavapai pitcher Chance Adams struck out 12 Aztec batters.

It was a different story in the second game as the Aztecs used a five-run 7th inning to open the game up as they won 9-0. Ethan Rosebeck (Cienega HS) pitched a gem going seven innings and giving up five hits with four strikeouts and two walks. He improved to 3-0 on the season. Ben Skuro (Sabino HS) closed it out pitching two innings with one hit and three strikeouts.

Smith increased the Pima lead with an RBI single in the sixth inning to score James Lynch and make it 3-0. Marruffo scored later in the inning off a Jorge Maldonado Jr. groundout. In the seventh inning, Smith was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Trey Stine (Ironwood Ridge HS) and A.J. Acosta (Douglas HS) hit an RBI single to score Dan Kennon to make it 6-0. Carrillo, Lynch and Smith would score the other three runs in the inning.

Smith finished 1 for 2 with two RBIs and Kennon and Lynch each scored two runs for the game.

The Aztecs will have a busy week next week playing six games; five being at the West Campus. They’ll start the week off playing at Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
