Although the high school swim season is now over, the Ironwood Ridge Nighthawks might wish it could go on longer.

The Ironwood Ridge boys’ team finished fourth overall, led by senior Kyle Adams, and just missed a top-three finish, only seven points shy of Anthem Boulder Creek High School.

Adams finished second statewide in the 200-yard freestyle and third in the 100 freestyle, and swam the third leg on the Nighthawks’ fourth-place 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams. Sophomore Matthew Berg also contributed to the high relay placements, as well as finishing fourth in the 100 backstroke, and eighth in the 50 freestyle. Freshman Ryan Bean hinted at a bright future, finishing fourth in the 200 individual medley.

The girls’ team was sixth overall, counting on veteran seniors Chloe Buser and Rachel Svetlik for leadership and quick finishes. Buser finished second in the 100 backstroke, fourth in the 200 freestyle, and helped the girls relay team to a sixth-place finish in the 200 freestyle. Svetlik placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke and 12th in the 200 individual medley, as well as contributing to the relay teams.

Mountain View

The Mountain Lion boys were Mountain View’s state meet story, as the boys swam to sixth place overall on the strength of high placements from seniors Ian Wishnies and Lee Gundy. Gundy placed fourth in the 100 yard freestyle, and Wishnies came in fifth in the 100 butterfly. Both shared relay duties on the Mountain Lions’ third-place 200 freestyle team, Gundy swimming first leg and Wishnies at anchor.

The Mountain View girls’ team finished 18th, but strong swims from junior Rachel Dodge gave the Mountain Lions something to cheer about. Dodge performed well in both distance and shorter events, placing sixth in the 500 freestyle and seventh in the 100 breaststroke.
