The lady spikers of Ironwood Ridge and Canyon Del Oro high schools went head-to-head last week.

In the first game, the Lady Dorados took an early lead, beating the Lady Nighthawks 25-19.

Ironwood Coach Bill Lang said CDO came on strong in the first match. The Nighthawks got off to a fast start, leading 6-1, but CDO came back to tie the game.

Lang said CDO’s Ashley Ellis “did a good job making us make mistakes.”

With some strong scores behind the setter, CDO was able to take an early 1-0 lead.

After that, the Nighthawks took over, winning three in a row – 25-20, 25-15 and 25-23 – for the 3-1 match victory.

“We played better in the second and third set, but really took control by the fourth set,” said Lang.

Senior Erin Hohenstein led the Nighthawks’ victory with 19 points, which included 13 kills and 6 aces.

IRHS sophomore Mykaela Hammer finished with 18 points, including 15 kills, one ace and one block. Her teammate, senior setter Chloe Heinenmann, had 29 assists and four blocks in the contest.

With only four home games so far this season, Lang said the Nighthawks have had a tough season. The Lady Nighthawks are currently 4-0 in league play, and 7-6 overall.

The Nighthawks have more away games this week. The ladies will be heading out-of-state for a tournament in California on Friday and Saturday.

CDO is currently 1-8 for the season, and will travel to Marana on Sept. 21. CDO will host Tucson High on Sept. 27 at 6 p.m.
