Unbeaten Cienega (7-0) turned out to be the latest top-notched team for 6-4 Canada Del Oro to battle.

The Bobcats showed why they're unbeaten with a convincing 61-34 home win over the visiting Dorados in girls basketball play last week.

The Bobcats put on a clinic, moving the ball, getting open shots, burying three-pointers, defending, forcing turnovers and controlling the boards.

"They're very well-coached," said Dorados coach Kerri Brown, whose squad won a state title a year ago. "We knew they'd be tough."

The Dorados struggled offensively all night long after they were outscored 12-4 in the first quarter, and committed 25 turnovers on the night.

"We have a young squad," Brown said. "We lost six seniors from last year."

Melanie Morris, who made the only two CDO field goals in the first, led the team with 11 points. She was 3-5 from the field, and also made 5-8 from the charity stripe.

"Our team needs to play better defense," Morris said. "Our turnovers were actually (fewer) tonight."

Morris sees a need for more of an inside-outside approach.

"We need to shoot more from the outside and not dribble so much," she said.

"This is our fourth loss," Brown said. "We've had a tough schedule."

Defensively, the Dorados held their own in the paint, to a certain extent, with Cienega getting to the line six times.

"We tried to contain as much as we could," Brown said.

Ale Tapia and Domino Manheim each added seven points for the Dorados, who were an impressive 11-15 for 73 percent shooting from the free throw line.

CDO is scheduled to play Sabino, Mingus from Cottonwood and Pusch Ridge Christian Academy in the Northwest Invitational Dec. 28-29.
