The Pima Community College baseball team (9-10-1, 6-4 in conference) fought hard in the second game and got the job done on Saturday to earn the sweep against Eastern Arizona College. Keith Zuniga (Nogales HS) took care of business on the mound in the first game.
Zuniga (4-0) pitched a complete-game shutout giving up four hits with five strikeouts and two walks in Pima’s 5-0 win in the first game. This was Zuniga’s second straight shutout and he’s given up one run in his last 22 innings. Alec Beyersdorf (Catalina Foothills HS), Dylan Dyson (Flowing Wells HS) and Juan Gamez (Cienega HS) each had an RBI in the 1st inning. Sergio Ortiz (Sunnyside HS) scored on a passed ball in the 2nd inning and Andre Porterfield (Sahuarita HS) scored on a wild pitch in the 4th.
Jesus Arvizu (Palo Verde HS) knocked in the winning run for the Aztecs in the 8th inning as Pima won the second game 6-5. Luis Robles (Flowing Wells HS) led off the 8th with a single, followed by a Beyersdorf’s single and finally Dyson’s sacrifice bunt moved Robles to third base. Eastern struck first in the 4th inning taking a 1-0 lead but the Aztecs came right back after Arvizu scored on an error and Ortiz hit an RBI single to bring around Bryant Muñoz to take a 2-1 lead. Eastern tied the game in the 5th at 2-2 but Dyson got the lead back for Pima with his RBI single in the bottom of the 5th to make it 3-2. The Aztecs would take a 5-2 lead but Eastern tied the game after scoring three runs in the 7th inning. In the 8th, Eastern had runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out and Cole Plouck (Empire HS) came on to pitch. He got a strikeout, walk and a groundout to end the threat. Jake Cole (Sahuaro HS) earned the save getting a strikeout to end the game. Muñoz and Robles each scored two runs and Ortiz went 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Aztecs will play a doubleheader at Central Arizona College in Coolidge on Tuesday. The first game will start at noon.
