Athlete of the week: Briana Hughes
Briana Hughes

Why put off till tomorrow what you can spike today?

One week into her first shift as starter, Ironwood Ridge middle blocker Briana Hughes has already strung together 21 kills, between two volleyball matches against Sunrise Mountain and Catalina Foothills.

Yet unlike the ball, the junior keeps modesty on her side of the net.

“I have a lot ahead of me to work on,” Hughes chuckled.

Teammates are amazed at the way Hughes caught fire during the past week. And while Hughes’ position doesn’t typically break the scoring records, she’s set on adding her name to the storied Nighthawk volleyball record book.

“I want to break the match record,” Hughes said, of the current 24-kill watermark. “That’s my main (personal) goal.”

Hughes eagerly admits an interest to earn a University of Arizona scholarship. The news should please Nighthawks coach Bill Lang, who shies from pushing his team to market themselves collegiately until they’re ready.

“We’re hoping she will play, because she could be something really special,” Lang said.
