The Pima Community College softball team (16-10, 11-9 in conference) lost the first game against Arizona Western College but were able to come back and break its five-game losing streak with a win in the second game on Tuesday in Yuma.
Aubre Carpenter (Sabino HS) gave the Aztecs a 4-3 lead in the top of the 7th inning after an RBI double but Arizona Western came back and scored two runs in the bottom-half of the inning to win 5-4. Carpenter finished 3 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored for the game. Yvette Alvarez (Sahuarita HS) took the loss and dropped to 7-7 on the year. Shawna Comeaux (Sabino HS) finished the game 1 for 2 with a run scored and an RBI while Alejandra Ortiz (Tucson Magnet HS) went 2 for 3 with a run scored.
The Aztecs responded in the second game defeating Arizona Western 10-3. The Aztecs scored four runs each in the 3rd and 4th innings. The Aztecs set the tone in the 3rd inning as Ortiz hit a 2-run double while Cynthia Pelayo (Vision HS) and Carpenter each had RBI doubles. Ortiz finished 2 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Gemma Contreras (Salpointe Catholic HS) went 4 for 4 with three runs scored and two stolen bases. Pelayo finished 3 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Stephanie Vejar (Tucson Magnet HS) earned her 8th win of the season after giving up two earned runs in 4 and-two-thirds innings. She had one strikeout and one walk. Alvarez came in and got her 4th save of the season.
The Aztecs will play at GateWay Community College on Saturday. The first game of the doubleheader will start at noon.
