Christina Solverson

Christina Solverson likes sweet tea and southern hospitality; now she’ll get plenty of both after inking an athletic scholarship to Auburn University last weekend.

Ironwood Ridge’s top volleyball setter became the first Division-I recruit harvested from her school’s trophy-laden squad. The one-year deal could land her a full ride should she make an impression.

“It’s a chance for me to play Division-I volleyball in a great conference,” Solverson said. “It’s been a dream of mine for a long time and now I get to go out and live it.”

Originally offered an academic scholarship at Arizona for her 4.6 GPA, Wildcat coaches left the door open for a spring walk-on.  The chance to suit up immediately for an SEC-trailing team bent on rebuilding better appeals to Solverson’s engineering interests, though.

“If you’re working hard and doing all the right things, you can only get better,” Solverson said.

Solverson collected a laundry list of Nighthawk records on the back of 2007’s 990-assist and 280-dig season.  Coach Bill Lang said she’d be a great fit at Auburn, as the team’s fresh coaching staff mirrors the scenario she encountered four years ago.

“It’s pretty sweet,” Lang said. “It’s the right situation for her — and for us, we’re pretty excited, too.”
