PCC Men’s Basketball Holds Off South Mountain CC


Tucson, AZ – The Pima Community College men’s basketball team (3-6, 3-3 in conference) got back in the win column on Wednesday beating South Mountain Community College 91-81 at the West Campus.

The Aztecs trailed early but responded with a pair of 7-0 runs in the first half to take a 41-33 lead at the end of the first half. Matt O’Boyle (Sunrise Mountain HS) was 3 for 3 from beyond the arc with 13 points.

The Aztecs went on an 8-0 run and led 56-41 with 13:19 left in the game and held a double digit lead for a majority of the second half.

South Mountain cut into the Pima lead late in the game after Murphy Gershman (Tucson Magnet HS) fouled out with 4:28 left. It hit four three-pointers down the stretch and cut the lead down to 87-81 at one point with under a minute left. The Aztecs hit 9 of its final 10 free throws to maintain their lead in the end.

O’Boyle finished with a game-high 26 points and Murphy Gershman put up another double-double with 19 points and 17 rebounds. Andres Marquez (Nogales HS) contributed with 12 points and eight assists and Cameron Volk (Tucson Magnet HS) had 11 points.

The Aztecs will attempt to gain more momentum as they play at Mesa Community College on Saturday at 4 p.m.
