The Pima Community College men’s tennis team (2-4, 1-3 in conference) had a tough match against Paradise Valley Community on Tuesday that was decided in the last match of the day but the Aztecs fell in the end 5-4 at the Tucson Racquet Club. This was the first match for new head coach Brian Ramirez, who met his players on Monday.
Landon Trejo (Ironwood Ridge HS) dropped the first set in his No. 6 singles match with Nino Newberry but forced a third set tiebreaker. Trejo took a 5-2 lead in the final set but lost 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (6-8). The match lasted over three and half hours.
The Aztecs took two of the three doubles matches with every result posting an 8-6 score. Brian Soto (Nogales HS) put the Aztecs up 3-1 when he won his No. 5 singles match 6-2, 6-0 over Erik Madrigal. Later, with the Aztecs down 4-3, Dylan Vo (Ironwood Ridge HS) was able to avoid a third set tiebreaker in his No. 2 singles match victory over Gino DiGiacinto-Hillis 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). His win tied it up for the Aztecs.
The Aztecs host Glendale Community College at the West Campus on Tuesday, Mar. 26. The match will start at 1:30 p.m.
