The Canyon Del Oro Dorados and Ironwood Ridge Nighthawks will again square off in the Division II state playoffs after breezing past their opponents Tuesday evening.
CDO defeated the Salpointe Lancers 11-1 at Tucson's Cherry Field, while the Nighthawks pulled off a 10-0 victory against Cactus High School in Phoenix.
The Dorados fell to a 1-0 deficit in the top of the first, but answered right back in the bottom of the inning with three runs, including two off a double from Dominique Gonzalez.
From there, the reigning Division II champs never looked back.
Pitcher Alexis Alfonso had a lot to do with that.
The CDO senior pitched a full game, striking out nine batters while giving up just one run.
Alfonso's spot-on pitching repeatedly cut innings short for the Lancers, allowing the Dorado offense to do what it does best - score runs.
CDO knocked in two runs in the bottom of the second and another four runs in the bottom of the third to build a 9-1 lead.
Gonzalez earned three RBIs in those two innings.
In the bottom of the fourth, it was Makenzie Sullivan's turn. The first batter of the inning, Sullivan knocked a single-run homer out of the park to build a nine-run lead over the Lancers.
An RBI from Carli Campbell made it 11-1 leading into the fifth and final inning, where the Lancers could not capitalize after Alfonso struck out three batters to seal the victory.
CDO and Ironwood Ridge will square off tomorrow at Cherry Field at 6:30 p.m. The victor will advance to the semifinals to play the loser of Greenway and Sunrise Mountain.
The winner of the Sunrise Mountain/Greenway game will automatically advance to the state championship game.
