A local Tucson-area swimming club, Tucson FORD Dealers Aquatics, which practices at the University of Arizona pool, took 12 local area swimmers to the NCSA Junior National Championship swim meet in Orlando last week.

NCSA is the “National Club Swimming Association” and holds the Spring National Championship annually, attracting more than 250 national teams and more than 1,500 of the nation’s top swimmers.  This year’s meet is designed to help junior swimmers (under age 19) qualify for the US Olympic Trials, which require qualifying times to be in the international format of a 50-meter long pool, rather than the common US High School and Collegiate format of a 25-yard short course competition.

This National Championship meet is holding the preliminary races in the 25-yard short course format to qualify the top 24-32 swimmers for nightly finals that are then swam in the 50-meter course, allowing the top swimmers to qualify for the Olympic Trials time standards.

The 12 local athletes (six young men and six young ladies) on the FORD Aquatics National Team include three local Northwest side swimmers:

CDO Senior, Maggie McCord, 2011 AIA Div 1 High School state Champion in the 50-yard freestyle, who is planning to attend the University of Houston next year on a full-ride swimming scholarship. McCord will need to place in the top 36 swimmers in the preliminaries in order to come back in one of the four championships final races in the 50-meter format. Currently, Maggie is just two-hundredths of a second short of her qualifying time.

Ironwood Ridge High School junior, Sara Borendame, 2011 AIA Div I High School State Champions in the 100- yard breaststroke and 2012 Arizona State Champion at the Arizona Senior State Championships in Mesa, two weeks ago, in the 100-yard breaststroke and 400-yard individual medley. Borendame took fifth place in the NCSA Junior National Championships finals of the 100-meter breaststroke while swimming a 1:12.01 time to meet the US Olympic trials qualifying standards.

Mountain View High School junior Kelsey Wuoti, a finalist at the 2011 AIA Div I High School State Championships, will also be competing to qualify.
